NicoRusso lead the creation of an Ai-based project that aims to be the first open database for facial recognition and other cognitive services trained in Spanish and with a strong Latin American focus, created for newsrooms.
When Grupo Octubre set up to incorporate Ai tools into the management of photo and video archives, they realized that the existing services were biased towards the anglo Saxon world. As an example, facial recognition services detected Joe Biden in videos and pictures, but not Alberto Fernández, the Argentinian president.
In 2021, the project was backed by Google News Initiative with a 6 figure grant.
The final result is a marketplace that helps newsrooms, not only make their archive "more foundable", but to monetize it for third parties.
Here is Lu Pinto (Project Leader) explaining the process at Media Party 2022.
In 2022, the London School of Economics through its program "JournalismAi", awarded a fellowship to the project´s development, joining forces with El Surti (from Paraguay) and GMA News (from The Philippines) to make image recognition for the newsrooms more inclusive. That became the Image2text project.
Here is an article from the Knight Center about both projects.
